ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS/AP) — The mayor of Atlantic City is turning next month’s implosion of the former Trump Plaza hotel and casino into a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club. Mayor Marty Small says he hopes to raise more than $1 million with the stunt.
President Donald Trump opened the casino in 1984.
It closed in 2014 and has fallen into a state of disrepair.
It will be dynamited on Jan. 29.
Trump cut most ties with Atlantic City in 2009 aside from a 10% fee for the use of his name on what were then three casinos in the city. That stake was extinguished when billionaire Carl Icahn took ownership of the company out of bankruptcy court in February 2016.
Trump Plaza has sat empty for six years and has been deteriorating. Earlier this year, large pieces of the facade broke loose from one of the hotel towers and came crashing to the ground. In one storm, additional debris fell from the structure onto the Boardwalk.
Icahn, who owns the former Trump Plaza building, and has agreed to the demolition. Small said he is eager to discuss potential uses for the land with Icahn once the casino is gone, including some sort of family attraction.
“Not often does inner-city oceanfront land open up,” the mayor said. “We have one chance to get this right.”
The last casino implosion in Atlantic City was in October 2007 when the former Sands casino was dynamited to make way for a new casino-hotel project that ultimately was never built.

Players Have Many Choices
By Henry Tamburin
This month I’ll summarize the different types of casinogames that you’ll find in the Atlantic City casinos with tips that will improveyour chances of winning.
You’ll find 1,383 gaming tables in AC of which 570 areblackjack. There are also a mind-boggling 41,986 slot machines.
Blackjack
Blackjack in AC is unique from the standpoint that theplaying rules are similar from one casino to the next and the playing cards mustbe dealt from a dealing shoe (no hand held games are allowed in AC which is whyyou won’t find single and double deck games in this market). In fact AC isknown for it’s 6 and 8-deck shoe dealt games where the dealer stands on soft 17and players can double down on any first two cards including after pairsplitting. Some casinos will allow you to resplit non-aces once, while othersup to 4 hands. According to Stanford Wong’s Current Blackjack News (www.bj21.com) the house edge over the basicstrategy player is 0.42% in the 6-deck game and 0.44% for the 8-deck game.
Most casinos also offer Spanish 21, a modified blackjackgame played with 8 decks of cards in which all the tens are removed. To make upfor the lack of tens, the casinos offer bonuses and favorable rules (such asgetting paid 3 to 2 if you have a five card hand that totals 21 and beingallowed to double down on any number of cards). In most casinos that offerSpanish 21, the dealer’s hit soft 17 and the house edge is 0.76%. In AC, thedealer’s must stand on soft 17 and this results in a house edge of only0.44%. If you want to play Spanish 21, you should learn the basic strategy thatis specific for Spanish 21 rather than use the traditional basic strategy.
Loosest Casino In Atlantic City Casinos
Thankfully you won’t find any blackjack tables paying 6-5for blackjack in Atlantic City. However a few casinos offer Double Exposureblackjack where the dealer’s two cards are dealt face up and the dealer winsall ties except a blackjack against a blackjack (house edge is 0.64%).
Frank Scoblete and Alene Paone report on the blackjackplaying conditions for card counters in my Blackjack Insider newsletter. Here’s what they had to say in the April issue.
“The news from Atlantic City’s blackjack tables is prettygood, at least as far as Borgata and Sands go. They both have nothing butsix-deck games (which is good for Atlantic City) and the penetration in thepast few weeks has been good to excellent at both establishments. These aregames that are definitely worth a look and a play “. (Note: You can read their full report at www.bjinsider.com).
Craps
When it comes to playing craps in AC, here’s what you’lltypically find according to Frank Scoblete, author of the new book The CrapsUnderground – The Inside Story of How Dice Controllers are Winning Millionsfrom the Casino.
“AC is more the traditional craps venue although on rareoccasions you’ll find a special game like mini-craps.
Roulette
You will find mostly American roulette wheels (with 38numbers including 0 and 00) although some casinos offer the European single 0roulette wheel (but only for higher stakes). The house edge on the double zerowheel is 5.26% for all bets (except the bet on the five numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and3, which is 7.89% and should be avoided). The house edge on the single zerowheel is 2.70%. Casinos in AC have the option of offering the unique surrenderrule on double zero wheels which means if the roulette ball lands in the 0 or00 pocket, a player wagering on any even payoff bet (red/black, odd/even, orhigh/low) will lose only half the amount wagered. This cuts the house edge to2.63% which makes the even payoff bets the best bet on the double zero wheel.
Baccarat
All casinos (except Harrah’s) have baccarat tables thatcater to high rollers. They also offer a lower stakes version called MiniBaccarat, which you will find on the main casino floor. The house edge inbaccarat is 1.06% for bank hand, 1.24% for player hand, and a whopping 14.4%for the tie bet (avoid it). Be careful if you play Mini Baccarat because it’s af-a-s-t game that allows the house edge to grind down your bankroll (smartplayers don’t bet on every hand in Mini Baccarat in order to slow down theirplay).
Poker
If poker is your game, head over to Bally’s, Borgata,Harrah’s, Sands, Tropicana, and Trump Taj Mahal. All total there are 172 pokertables with the most at Trump Taj Mahal (66), Tropicana (42) and Borgata (34).
Table Games Based on Poker

Video Poker

John Robinson, a video poker expert and author of SlotExperts Guide to Playing the Slots, has this to say about video poker inAC.

“Positive expectation video pokerremains a rare breed in Atlantic City. Trump Plaza's one 10/7 Double Bonusmachine has been the only positive paytable in the entire city for years. Fullpay video poker, on the other hand, is relatively easy to find. Quarter playerslooking for 9/6 Jacks-or-Better will find the best selection at Borgata. Dollar9/6 players have more choice. Their best choices are Bally's (Triple Play),Borgata (single-hand and Multi-Strike), Harrah's, Sands, Taj Mahal, andTropicana.
Resorts is the place to go toplay quarter Pick 'Em Poker. Bally's has one one-dollar Pick 'Em machine.Claridge, Harrah's, Hilton, and Tropicana all have quarter Double Bonus DoubleJackpot (9/6 Double Bonus with a 1600-coin Royal) machines. Bally's and Hiltonoffer 25-cent Triple Play 8/5 Bonus Poker with a progressive.
Turning to the wild side, thereare plenty of Joker's Wild machines, if you don't mind playing a 97% paybackmachine. Bally's and Claridge also have Double Joker's Wild in dollars.”
Slots
You’ll find nickel, quarter, fifty cents, $1, $5, $25 and $100 dollarslot machines. Winnings from slot machines (includes video poker machines)account for 74% of the annual amount that the AC casinos win from players. TheApril issue of Casino Player magazine summarizes the casinos that paidback the most last year on their slot machines. The crown for Loosest Slots inAC went to the new Borgata casino, which turned in a 92.09 percent overallreturn on its coin free slot floor. The two AC casinos that finished just asmidgen behind were the Sands (92.08%) and AC Hilton (92.06%).
Here’s another tip from John Robinson regarding slot club cashback. in AC.

“Slot club cashback is bounceback at all casinos except the Sands, whereyou can not only collect your cashback on the same day, you can collect itright at your machine.”

Other games
You’ll also find the followinggames in some AC casinos: the Big 6 Wheel, Keno, Sic Bo, Pai Gow, and DoubleAttack Blackjack.
One final tip. Be sure you bone up onyour playing strategy before you tackle any casino game because as casinogambling writer and author Bill Burton correctly states: 'Luck comesand goes...Knowledge stays forever.'
